AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D.

Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. first premiered in September of 2013.

When Phil Coulson died in Avengers (2012) a movement began on social media - #CoulsonLives.  Despite Coulson being dead by the hands of Loki, Joss Whedon decided to not only bring back the beloved character, but to give him his own TV Show.  With cast of Ming-Na Wen, Bret Dalton, Chloe Bennett, Elizabeth Henstridge, Iain De Caestecker  and later on, Bill Paxton.  This Marvel TV show was headed for a sink or swim situation.  Following alongside the MCU movies, Season 1 ended alongside “Captain America: Winter Solider”.

Season 2 was fast paced and focused on Skye becoming her true form after finding out she was an Inhuman.  With that focus, Coulson was in the background fighting for S.H.I.E.L.D. which lead to the "Avengers: Age of Ultron" tie in.

Joss was executive producer for the first two seasons, which more than linked the MCU and TV together, but he gave the reigns to his brother Jed and his wife Maurissa Tancharoen.  Seasons 3 and 4 moved along to their own drum so to speak in order to create new stories and really branch out from under the MCU radar.

Most people expected Season 5 to be the conclusion, but fans and cast alike was surprised that it was renewed for a 6th Season. Despite the renewal, it was given a green-light for only 13 episodes instead of the standard 22.  Half way through Season 6 filming, ABC decided to renew it for a Season 7.  It is another 13-episode order.  Jeph Loeb (President of Marvel TV) and Jeff Bell decided alongside Maurissa & Jed Whedon, that while being renewed for a 7th Season, it is best to finish the series the way they wished to end it.  Jeph Loeb even stated that they had run out of ideas and decided to end it on their own terms.   The final Season 7 is scheduled to air in summer 2020.

On Fury's orders, Coulson was brought to the Guest House (Classified Location) where he was then brought back to life using treatments developed by Project T.A.H.I.T.I, a project which he had formerly presided over. To preserve his sanity after he was healed, all memories of those events were removed from his mind with brain surgery.

Coulson returned to S.H.I.E.L.D. to lead a new team which consisted of Leopold Fitz, Jemma Simmons, Melinda May & Grant Ward (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 1).  While with this new team, he discovered the truth behind the events of his death. Information about his death lead to the Hydra uprising in S1, and despite the dissolution of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the betrayal of one of Coulson's trusted team members, Grant Ward, Nick Fury appointed Coulson the new Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. and ordered him to rebuild the organization from scratch.

For Coulson to build S.H.I.E.L.D. back up, he had to lead the remaining S.H.I.E.L.D. agents into battle against Hydra, crippling the terrorist organization (see Season 2).  Unfortunately, the United States Air Force via Glenn Talbot, made Coulson and his S.H.I.E.L.D. agents fugitives. During the fall of S.H.I.E.L.D., Coulson began to write alien symbols on the wall. It was later determined that the GH-325 that was given to him to save his life, was the culprit of said writing. The writing was a blueprint to a alien city that gave Skye her Inhuman powers. Once Coulson and his team destroyed the alien city, it was revealed that two members that was in Coulson's trusted circle turned on him as they were announced as spy's in the REAL S.H.I.E.L.D. which was led by Robert Gonzales. After a battle and attempt to take over the secret base, they finally made a deal to team up and work together against Hydra. Later, they compromised and announced Phil Coulson as the sole and rightful Director.

After S.H.I.E.L.D. became one organization, the uprising of Inhuman's became the new threat. Skye became Daisy Johnson and her mother Jiaying was the new threat. Coulson paid an extreme price in this victory against Jiaying as his left arm was cut off due to catching a Terrigan Crystal.  With Coulson's new battle as an amputee, Melinda May leaving to go be with Ex-Husband Andrew. Coulson still stood strong and helped bring about a new Initiative called "The Secret Warriors" which would be led by Daisy herself to ensure the safety of humanity.

Recruiting for Inhuman's would prove difficult with the ATCU (Advanced Threat Containment Unit) which was led by Rosalind Price, as she was picking them up before Coulson’s team could manage to get there in time. During this time, Coulson began a working relationship with Ms. Price, and it grew into a romantic one. During said relationship, Coulson and the ATCU had to battle it out with Grant Ward, Lash and the Inhuman problem (see Season 3).

Grant Ward killed Rosalind Price right in front of Phil Coulson which lead Coulson to follow Grant to the alien planet named Maveth to kill him once and for all. Unfortunately, due to his recklessness, Ward’s dead body was taken over by the “Hive.” Coulson battled with guilt for causing this new threat, he in turn invested every effort to derail Hive’s plans at World Domination. Shield Agent and Inhuman, Lincoln Campbell sacrificed himself to kill Hive and save humanity.

After Lincoln sacrificed himself for the greater good of humanity, Coulson stepped down as Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. in order to not only focus on the hunt for Rogue Agent, Quake. He also stepped down because he felt that the Director should be an Inhuman. Jeffrey Mace also known as “The Patriot” took over as Director. While on the trail of Daisy Johnson, Coulson and Mack discovered who and what Lucy Bauer was and what her goals was. Coulson had to make an alliance with Vigilante Daisy and her new partner Robbie Reyes Aka Ghost Rider. Their mission together was to find the Darkhold before Lucy and her gang did (The Darkhold is a Book of sins that was made from dark matter from the Hell Dimension).  During the search, they visited and later attempted to get Robbie’s Uncle, Eli Morrow out of prison. Eli and Coulson’s team made it to the lab that Lucy was looking for but unfortunately Coulson, Robbie and Fitz were caught in the middle of an explosion and entered another dimension. While in this dimension the team discovered that Eli was the culprit of which the Darkhold had gotten ahold. They were able to escape this other dimension but not without the help of Holden Radcliffe and his LMD Aida.

Once Aida read the Darkhold, her artificial brain was corrupt due to the dark forces that the Darkhold held. Holden also ended up reading the Darkhold and with Aida, they made the “Framework.” It took some time, but the goal was to gather all the main S.H.I.E.L.D. agents that they could and enter them into said Framework. The first to go in was Agent Melinda May. Others followed suit except Daisy Johnson and Jemma Simmons.  While in the framework, Coulson was a High School Teacher who taught History and taught about how Hydra won the war against Shield. It took some time, but Coulson and his fellow S.H.I.E.L.D. agents was able to come together and defeat Hydra and Aida, despite no memories from the “other world.” Once they escaped from the Framework, Coulson met up with Robbie Reyes to defeat Aida once and for all. Phil became the Ghost Rider and killed Aida but once he bonded with the Spirit of Vengeance, he learned that it was going to come at a cost. The cost was a heavy consequence from cheating death once before, but he decided to keep it to himself instead of sharing with his team. While having that debate within himself, Coulson and his team was kidnapped and sent to the year 2091.

Coulson and his team soon found out that they were sent to the future to help guarantee a better future for planet earth which was foresaw by an inhuman. Finding out that the world was enslaved by the Kree and Earth had been destroyed, they must race against the clock to find away to go back to their time and change the future. However, once they got back to present time, Coulson’s health began to decline. Jemma found out and talked with the rest of the crew in which resulted in Phil Coulson was dying and becoming Ghost Rider had put him on borrowed time.

Coulson gave himself up to the head of Hydra, General Hale, to learn more about the alien invasion they were about to face. While on Hale’s secret base, he learned that General Talbot was alive and being held against his will and that their new threat was called “The Confederacy.” Once Coulson escaped with Talbot in hand, they found out that Talbot had been brain washed by Hydra. As the Confederacy threat loomed over, Talbot decided to take in all the Gravitonium to help the cause. He helped win the fight, but the war was far from over. Coulson and Talbot floated up to meet with one of the leaders, Qovas. Talbot, who became Graviton, took over the ship and was under the impression that despite a love/hate relationship in the past. Talbot felt as if Coulson was the one keeping him from helping the world. He locked Coulson and May in a prison on his new ship and took off to find more Gravitonium. Not only did Phil and Melinda escape, they finally had their first real kiss on this alien space ship.

While Coulson was on his way back to the base, he began bleeding and collapsed. Daisy and May was going against Phil’s orders to attempt to try and find a cure for Coulson. However, even though they found a cure for him, it was either let Coulson live or save the world. Despite arguments from the team on the decision, May took it upon herself to give Coulson the sole choice. After taking the serum or so we thought, they began the final battle to Save the World. Daisy found out that he did not take the serum and he had placed the Serum in her gauntlet sleeves. Daisy was able to inject herself with the serum and become Super-Powered to defeat Graviton.

The World was saved once again but this time from a dystopian future ran by the Kree. The downfall was that Fitz passed away. We later found out that there was another Fitz floating in Space so when the team came together for a Farewell, it was Coulson’s retirement knowing his impending death was near. Simmons even gave Phil days, if he was lucky, weeks to live. Coulson got to say his good-bye to the team and chose to spend the rest of his days with the love his life, Melinda May on the beach of Tahiti.

Tahiti was truly a magical place!

Coulson and May in Tahiti

A year after the death of Phil Coulson, S.H.I.E.L.D. is attempting to rebuild.  With half of the main team in space searching for Leo Fitz, the rest are still recovering from his death.  Melinda May even told Mack (new director) that “they” got more time than they expected.  With S.H.I.E.L.D., there is always threats to humanity and this season is no different when a band of misfits are seen going into a museum to destroy it to make way for their leader “Sarge” who looks exactly like the late Phil Coulson.

Sarge teaser

Sarge and his crew of Snowflake, Jaco and Pax start murdering people and S.H.I.E.L.D. doesn’t like it. However, once on their tracks, they not only realize he has Coulson’s face but turns out his DNA is also a 100% match to the original. S.H.I.E.L.D. teams including Melinda May, start to deduce that he isn’t just a doppelganger, but he is Phil Coulson but without his memory. Melinda May gets kidnapped by Sarge and Snowflake and while she is tied up, she begins to have flashbacks of their last days in Tahiti. Once she comes back and realizes she isn’t with Phil Coulson but in fact with Sarge, she battles back and eventually takes down Sarge and gets him back to the S.H.I.E.L.D. base “The Lighthouse.”

Sarge arrival

While in S.H.I.E.L.D. custody, Sarge sees the holographic Phil Coulson from “Fury’s Toolbox” and is being told he is nothing compared to Phil Coulson. He admits that he only cares about killing the shrike and saving the planet from “Izel” who we later find out is his partner from back at their home world.  Melinda May shoots Sarge while under the influence of Izel and the team learns that he can’t die, in fact he came back stronger than ever and with more memories each time he was killed.

Coulson in Tahiti flashback

As he regains his memories, we find out that he is a unformed creature from another world that is named “Pachakutiq” and when Coulson closed the “Fear Dimension” in Season 5, a copy of him was created and sent into that dimension, and Pachakutiq took his form. This demon also got his memories and was trying to fight for his family. Melinda May & Daisy Johnson both believed that Coulson was still inside him and fought for him until the end. Ultimately, Daisy had to kill the demon inside and was unable to save Sarge or Alt-Coulson. Melinda May was stabbed by Sarge and as she passed away, she said, “I was hoping to see him again… I guess… I’ll see him again soon enough” while in Daisy’s arms.

As Melinda passes away, we see a future Jemma Simmons who puts May in a cryochamber and we later find out that the team went back in time to the early 1900’s to escape from Chronicom hunters, that they developed a LMD of Phil Coulson. It was said that he is the most advanced LMD with Chronicom hardware and that they updated him with everything that he has missed. Daisy Johnson didn’t hesitate to wake this new Coulson up. Once awake, he looked at his team with a smile and “Hey Guys” as he was officially activated.
